1yearofstitches tag

For those who are participating in the 1 year of stitches challenge and who want to periodically post their progress on this blog - I've set up a new tag label  -  #1yearofstitches.  If you add this label to your post then you will be able to search on the label to see your progress over time. If you will be posting to another site, send me the URL and I will create a project page with all the links. Have a Happy New Year Wild Women!

1 year of stitches

Image
Following on from Cara's inspirational stitching posts ... Susan Robin Sorrell shared a post by Sarah Barnes on the Brown Paper Bag blog  to the Fiber Arts/Mixed Media Art group Facebook page this morning which caught my eye. Sarah was showcasing the 1 Year of Stitches  challenge - a 365 day project by Hannah Claire Somerville which she started at the beginning of 2016.  Each day, at least one stitch is added to the same embroidery hoop (or two). Throughout the year, the design grows and grows, taking on a life of its own inside of this circle. In addition to the stitches, Hannah chronicles each day via Instagram and includes a short post. A number of people have been inspired to start their own 1 year of stitches project, including Michelle Anais Beaulieu-Morgan who started hers in mid 2016. What do you think Wild Women?  I am seriously considering dusting of my embroidery hoop - yes I know a number of you will be totally shocked to know I even have one:).  If you

Hi ladies While I'm on a roll (!), here's another take on the spool. Tanglewood Threads stitches a beautiful record of the year. She calls them scratchings. Here's an example from 2012. Links to her scratchings. 2012 2013 2014 2015 Lots of inspiration here! Cara

Leona's capelet

As I won't be at the November meeting I thought I would post a couple of pictures of my mostly finished capelet from Svenja's workshop - modelled by the lovely Joy Webster! A few addional beads in a couple of places and it will be done!   I love the texture and will definetly be experimenting more with the technique into the future. And in a shameless plug ... my tabard that I created at Nancy Ballesteros' Shifting Shapes in Silk workshop will be on display at Robina Gallery over the next two weeks as part of the City of Gold Coast Council Officers Exhibitition - if you are in the area, please drop in an take a look.

Svenja's workshop

What a fabulous day we had yesterday at Kirra Hill!  Weather was superb and everyone was in fine form - including the magical Svenja.  We had a blast! I have created a shared album of our works in progress, which we will be adding to over the comming weeks.  Enjoy! Click on the photo to view the album

Christine has been busy sketching our neighbours at Linking you locally for Sketch crawl.  I can see an art journal in the making😊 Gold Coast Quilters Purl Divas and the Wild Women Textile Art Group!

Linking you locally

Image
The Linking you locally event has kicked off at Broadbeach Library. Our Wild Women creations are attracting a lot of attention. Feedback was very positive. There was a lot of discussion about technique and general interest and compliments on our work. It also provided a chance to do a bit of networking with some of the other groups. Many thanks to Helen who dropped in to give Christine and I a chance to wander around and catch a bite to eat.

October 2016 meeting

Image
What an extraordinary array of creativity was on display at the meeting on Saturday!  We had examples of eco dyeing, felting, art journals and pages in the making, cushions, bags, soulful divas, painted fabric and Michelle's amazing sign for the Linking you locally event at Broadbeach Library. There was so much on show that I have created a photo gallery of the images ... I excluded any items that will form part of our display at the event, as I will create a separate post for that. Lilyan's ATASDA display

Image
Posted on behalf of Lilyan. This was a piece done for the ATASDA guild stand at the Quilt and Craft Show using fabric dyed at a Wendi Trulsen workshop. The fabric was jersey silk/cotton mixture dyed in a sandwich. I used various gum leaves, silver dollar, onion skin, with  a green sari silk thread. This was quilted onto an A4 size wool fabric in gold thread and finished with blanket stitch using eco dyed silk thread.

eMagazines

At the meeting yesterday we started talking about what magazines are available from the GC Libraries. Two services you may not be aware of are Zinio and Flipster - which are eMagazine content providers.  You can access them from the Online Library link on the catalogue. They are designed to use with a tablet or a computer and you will need your library card number and Pin to access these resources. Both can be used via a browser or through an App. Any of the library staff can help show you how to use these services if you need assistance. I found 39 art/craft related titles on Zinio not including digital photography and sugar craft. Rather than going through the A to Z list (which I did!) you can filter by genre. Choose "Art & photo" and "Crafts" to get an idea of the range.  You are able to download issues to read offline which I find very useful on long flights, etc. Flipster is a newer service and has a smaller title list, but is very easy to use and wo

September meeting

Image
What a fabulous day! A big welcome to Karen and Michelle, who joined us for the first time today. Patti kicked off show and tell with the exciting news that that two hats she entered into the GC Show were awarded 2nd and 3rd prizes for millinery, and the dreamcatcher was awarded 1st place.   Click here to see the photos of her masterpieces! Also on display were a colourful array of beautifully embellished felted items and textile art journal books. We all had great fun starting work on our Soulful Divas and look forward to seeing how they have progressed at the October meeting! Finally, Helen, Maggie and Patti shared the exciting news that the hats they submitted for the  Little Hats Project -  Hats for Happiness Australia  are now up on the Project Facebook page and the auction has started.  Bidding closes noon 7 October.  If you are on Facebook, please take a moment to visit the page and support this worthy cause by liking or sharing those entries that appeal to you.

Pleased with my efforts ...

Hi Wild Women I'm happy to report that my recent entries into the Gold Coast Show awarded me 2nd and 3rd prizes in millinery and a great big 1st in the dream catcher section.  Wasn't fit enough to go to the show when it was on, so it was a real thrill when collecting them to see their certificates attached.   Patti x  For those who may of missed it - click here to see photos of Patti's show entries.

Events and links of interest

I have make a couple of changes to our blog site and am seeking your feedback.  I have added a new page called Links of Interest which you should be able to access by clicking the link under our Wild Women banner. I think this works well for the links to like minded groups and workshop tutor websites etc. but I'm not sure whether the non Wild Women events should go here or on the calendar on our homepage.  To see an example of how an event might look on the calendar go to September and you will see I've added the Quilt Journeys exhibition. Please comment on this post to let me know which option you prefer: Keep the calendar for our Wild Women events (meetings, workshops) etc and use the links page for other events; or Add them all to the calendar.

Rubbings to apron

Image
Hi ladies I now have a unique bright apron, featuring the rubbings piece that I created at the Sue Dennis workshop. The plain white fabric went from this ... Rubbings on white cotton fabric To this - painted and further marked .... Painted and added marks To this!   Happy apron I did try some free motion stitching on one section but did not continue as I thought it detracted from the rubbings design. I'm really happy with the end result - a lovely and bright apron with deep pockets! What have you done with your workshop pieces? Happy making!

Show and Tell - Places fabric pages

Image
Hi ladies There were so many inspiring creations shared during the Show and Tell at our meeting yesterday! It was both enjoyable and idea generating. Photos and comments by each of us of our contributions, would make a great reference over time for the group. So to get the ball rolling, I thought I'd post my fabric pages on the theme "Places".  Spine & front cover Happy Places page Canberra page Stamps of Australia page I have made comments on the pages and provided further photos on my blog. You can access these by clicking on this link.  Cara Creates: Places to go . One question I was asked was the glue I used for the "stamp" page. It's called Rico Design napkin glue. I bought it at a craft show in a kit. Click on this link for more info  Rico Design Napkin Glue . It dries to a transparent, non-sticky, water resistant film. I've found it to work really well in adhering paper / tissue to fabric. Looking

Mad Hatters Tea Party

Patti has been hard at work on her entries for the Gold Coast Show and asked if I could post these photographs for her. As the title of the post suggests, the Millinery theme this year is "Mad Hatters Tea Party".  Don't they look fabulous?!!! Half Past Liquorice M'selle Blanche Lapin
