1 year of stitches

Following on from Cara's inspirational stitching posts ... Susan Robin Sorrell shared a post by Sarah Barnes on the Brown Paper Bag blog  to the Fiber Arts/Mixed Media Art group Facebook page this morning which caught my eye.

Sarah was showcasing the 1 Year of Stitches challenge - a 365 day project by Hannah Claire Somerville which she started at the beginning of 2016.  Each day, at least one stitch is added to the same embroidery hoop (or two). Throughout the year, the design grows and grows, taking on a life of its own inside of this circle. In addition to the stitches, Hannah chronicles each day via Instagram and includes a short post.

A number of people have been inspired to start their own 1 year of stitches project, including Michelle Anais Beaulieu-Morgan who started hers in mid 2016.

What do you think Wild Women?  I am seriously considering dusting of my embroidery hoop - yes I know a number of you will be totally shocked to know I even have one:).  If you would like to join in the 2017 challenge you can find more information about it here.

Don't let the social media side of things put you off - we can post monthly photos of your progress on the blog if you don't want to maintain your own diary.

  1. I love this idea! Just one stitch a day makes it very doable and by the end of the year, a piece of very special art. Think I'll join the project too. Your embroidery hoop welcomes coming back into the world Leona :-)

    1. Actually Cara, when I found my embroidery hoop it still had an almost completed cross stich in place ... task for the coming days, finish the cross stitch before Jan 1!

    3. What a great idea. If you finish that cross stitch earlier, Leona, I have a vintage tapestry, 2/3 complete of Caravaggio (lutist). On second thoughts maybe I should break it out!
I have several hoops lying idle if anyone would like to borrow one for this project, let me know. Now where's that small one ...

One stitch a day sounds eminently doable even for me!

  3. Getting ready! I've signed up, have requested to join the A year of stitches Facebook group. Bought a bigger embroidery hoop (but am still determined to finish the elephant cross stitch). Now ... what fabric to use?
