Sue Dennis Surface Design workshop

Image
What a wonderful time we had at Kirra Hill on Sunday with the inspirational Sue Dennis!  We spent the morning experimenting with rubbings using Shiva paint sticks. Then in the afternoon we were printing and stenciling up a storm. Sue has posted her photos from the day on her facebook page Sue Dennis Textiles - well worth a look if you are on Facebook. I have created a shared album for any photos from the day that you may wish to share - which you can access by clicking on the photo below.

June Meeting

Image
We were back at Broadbeach Library for our June meeting - inspired by our recent visits to the Winter Wonders exhibition and the 11th Avenue Creative opening .  Leona showed off her Margaret Smit hat from the exhibition, and Maggie brought her poem from the opening.  Lilyan displayed some gorgeous South African textiles and Linda shared some felting she had done in the UK with Sheila Smith and Liz Clay.  Eileen had created some beautifully embellished glasses cases. Patti displayed her stunning bookcover, organza rose and showed how she had converted the top section of her upholstery sample into a beautiful clothes hanger.  Helen brought some books of interest for workshop next week, and Carolyn showed us her fabric journal ...which lead very nicely into our activity which was to create some fabric journal pages.

11th Avenue Creative, Palm Beach Community Lounge and Library.

Helen, Leona and I went to the opening of 11th Avenue Creative in Palm Beach last Thursday. What an exciting new venture! We met representatives from different groups who are using the centre for knitting, calligraphy, painting, card making, quilting and other crafts as well as displays of simple computer coding and Lego. 11th Avenue Creative  11th Avenue Creative is a creative community space at  Palm Beach Community Lounge and Library , for artists, crafts people, film makers and STEM (science, technology, mathematics, and engineering) enthusiasts to learn, create, collaborate and share their ideas and experience.  Not-for-profit groups or individuals that are interested in running or participating in workshops or using the space are encouraged to contact your local library or City Libraries on  5581 6788 . How to tag books of interest in the library catalogue

Image
Do you have any library book recommendations to share with the Group?  If so, you can tag the catalogue record with the label WWTAG so that we can create our own reading list. To do so: Go to the library catalogue  https://catalogue.goldcoast.qld.gov.au   Sign in with your library card number and PIN Search for the book Click on the plus symbol under Additional actions (under the Request it button) and click on the label icon. A new window will pop up for you to enter a tag.  Type in WWTAG then click submit. To see the recommendations people have made just go to the library catalogue and type WWTAG in the search box!

Next meeting reminder

Just a reminder: Our next meeting is on this Saturday, 18th June, in the meeting room at Broadbeach Library from 10 am to 2pm Don't forget to bring materials for the fabric art journal activity as per Maggie's email; Lilyan will bring some A4 sized calico to make the base of our pages. If you want to bring your own fabric for the base, chose something which is not too floppy. The A4 size can make a double page or a single one if you want to work on a larger format. Think about what colours and themes you might like to use. Bring small scraps of fabrics to use – brightly coloured, textured, patterned, but not too thick. Trimmings: think lace, ribbons, buttons, beads, different coloured threads, fibres – anything that can be use for embellishment. A Glue stick (UHU, Pritt etc) would be good so you can experiment with the placement of your fabrics before you start to stitch them. A sewing kit Fabric crayons, Shiva Stiks, pens – anything which you can use on fabric.

Winter Wonders exhibition @ Hilltop on Tamborine

Image
Maggie, Patti, Helen and I had a wonderful morning at the Winter Wonders exhibition at the Hilltop Gallery. Put together by the Tamborine Mountain Arts Collective (including our very own Linda Harden) it is a fabulous and inspiring display of creativity and skill.  Stunning Eco dyeing, felting, hats, jewllery and all sorts of wearable and decorative art.  It is open until June 26, and is well worth a visit.  You can also indulge in some delicious refreshments at the cafe - the view is stunning!

Bookcovers

There is a fabulous bookcover project in the new issue of Embellish magazine - very reminiscent of Leonora's work where she uses tulle to stabilise a composite of fabric cutouts and layers. Unfortunately the library doesn't subscribe to this magazine, but it is available via iTunes or epocketmags, or at a number of newsagents if you are interested.

Workshops

I'm so looking forward to our upcoming workshops. It is always inspiring to learn new techniques and to see how everybody uses them.  To help get into the mood, here are the links to our three tutors websites/blogs: Sue Dennis Wendi Trulson Svenja Whose workshop are you most looking forward to attending?
